Common stone runners ( Lithobius forficatus )

Stone runners ( Lithobiomorpha ) are an order of centipedes ( Chilopoda ).

Features

The stone runners have run 15 leg -bearing segments, in each of which a shorter and a longer back plate ( tergite ) alternate and thus meet the longer tergites in the middle of the fuselage. The eyes are composed of several point-like simple eyes ( ocelli ). The Hüftglieder the Endbeine wear under hand glandular pores from which a defensive secretions can be secreted. The arrangement of these pores is used in some types as designated feature.

Way of life

Stone runners mainly live under stones or bark, rotten wood or leaf litter. The Eilarve the stone runner has only seven pairs of legs. The last pair of legs of the adult runner stone is used for defense.

Species

The stone runners are divided into two families, the Henicopidae and Lithobiidae. This former 24 and the latter include 104 genera worldwide.

In Central Europe the Henicopidae come with only one type, Lamyctes fulvicornis before, during the Lithobiidae have numerous types. The most common type in Central Europe is the congregation stone runners ( Lithobius forficatus ).
