Central Authentication Service

Central Authentication Service (CAS) is a federated identity management system which was originally developed by Yale University. Meanwhile CAS is a project of the JA- SIG consortium, which aims to link universities and other higher education institutions in order to ensure a free exchange of knowledge and technologies. The functionality of CAS is basically comparable with Shibboleth, only in the implementation, there are certain differences.

Technology

For an identity management solution with a CAS Central Authenticate server is required. This Central Authenticate Server is a HTTP server running on the Java servlets that take over the registration and authentication procedures in principle. Three URLs are needed, with which the registration and authentication procedures carried out in each case through an encrypted HTTP connection ( HTTPS connection ) to the Central Authentication Server.
