The Central Bank of Iceland ( Isl Sedlabanki Íslands, German " Icelandic central bank " ) is the central bank of the State of Iceland.

It was spun off in 1961 following a decision by the Icelandic parliament Althingi from Landsbanki, which until then had held the tasks of the note issue, but served only a few tasks in the context of monetary policy.

The Central Bank is owned by the Icelandic State and is managed by a committee of three governors who are appointed by the Prime Minister for a period of seven years. They are supervised by a board of seven members. The Central Bank has the sole right to issue banknotes and coins of the Icelandic krona to print or mint and issue. In 1986, the Central Bank lost by law the right to control the rate of the Icelandic banks.

Although it is legally separate, is traditionally expected of the Bank to follow the course of the government. 2001, the Central Bank has been equipped with the right, independently of the requirements of the government to influence the inflation and to pursue a monetary policy at a stable price. The current president of the Icelandic Central Bank is Már Guðmundsson, who the interim president Svein Harald Øygard replaced on August 20, 2009.

Up to a change in the law in 2009 there was a three-member executive committee of so-called governors.
