Central retinal artery

The central retinal artery, also called the central artery of the eye, is actually an arteriole. It arises from the ophthalmic artery, then runs in the optic nerve ( optic nerve ) to the optic disc ( blind spot ) where they usually divides into four branches. It is an end artery and is responsible for the supply of the inner layers of the retina with oxygen and nutrients. Your closure can lead to a so-called amaurosis fugax. The outer layers of the retina (especially the photoreceptors ) are supplied via the blood vascular system of the choroid ( choroid ).

The hyaloid artery is a terminal branch of the central retinal artery, which supplies the developing lens with nutrients during embryonic development and regresses before birth.
