Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca

The Biblioteca CENTRALA Universitară " Lucian Blaga " ( German Central University Library, Hungarian Központi Egyetemi Könyvtár ) is the library of the Babeş -Bolyai University in Cluj- Napoca ( Cluj ) in Transylvania, Romania.

In 1990, the library also labeled " Lucian Blaga " - the name of the Romanian poet and philosopher - and with a stock of over 3.66 million media (2011 ), it is, according to the Romanian National Library of Bucharest, the second largest library in Romania.

History

The library was founded in 1872 at the same time with today's Babeş -Bolyai University, with an initial stock of around 18,000 volumes. Until 1874, the Transylvanian Museum of the University Library of Cluj was attached to his library was founded in 1859 by the Transylvanian Museum Association and donations from the bishops Andrei Alexandru Şaguna and Sterca - Şuluţiu, and the Count József Kemény and Imre Miko.

By 1909, the library was housed in the main building of the University. Between 1906 and 1908, the current main building of the Central University Library was built according to the plans of the Budapest architect Kálmán Giergl and Flóris basket in historicist style.

1927 the library received the designation Biblioteca CENTRALA Universitară " Ferdinand I ", named after Ferdinand I the Romanian king. 1948, the previously independent library of the Transylvanian Museum was integrated into the University Library of Cluj- Napoca. With the support of many Romanian research organizations (including the Library of the Romanian Academy ), the library collection of the late 1930s quadrupled by the end of the 1940s, from about 580,000 to over 2,000,000 media media. 1959 saw the foundation of today's Babeş -Bolyai University.
