Centralbron

Centralbron (Swedish: Central Bridge ) is one of the main roads in the center of the Swedish capital Stockholm. You six lanes connects the districts Norrmalm and Södermalm over the islands Gamla Stan ( Old Town) and Riddarholmen together. It consists of two sections, the north bridge from the train station to Gamla Stan and the south bridge from Gamla Stan to Söderledstunneln.

General

The Centralbron is about 1200 meters long and leads through the Söderström and Riddarfjaerden. The capacity of the bridge is located at about 130,000 vehicles daily. In Gamla Stan, the bridge of many historic buildings passes by in close proximity, for example at the Riddarholmskirche and the Noblemen.

History

The first plans for a bridge called " Centralbron " there was in the first decade of the 20th century. Many plans were discarded, the final plan was adopted in 1928 for the construction of the bridge. In the 1930s, the need for a new bridge was getting bigger, which should lead along the west of Gamla Stan. The hub in southern Slussen and the Västerbron were opened in 1935.

Railway bridge

Runs parallel to the vehicle - bridge railway bridge ( Södra and Norra järnvägsbron ), which leads to the Stockholm Central Station. Over the years, the capacity of the railway bridge was exhausted and it was given to a broadening to another track, but this was met with residents to criticism because they saw changed the historical image of the city to the detriment. For this reason, the construction of a railway tunnel Citybanan was decided that the building is currently (2008) underway and should be finished built until 2017, so that the pulling capacity increases. The costs are estimated at 16 billion Swedish crowns.

North Bridge

For the North Bridge in 1961 started the construction, the opening took place on September 3, 1967. Has a length of 246 meters and is 22.3 meters ready. At the height of it connects to the south bridge, in the north makes a sharp turn and runs over the tracks of Stockholm Central Station and then executes as a normal road further into the Blekholmstunneln, which runs west of the main train station.

Until the mid- 60s, the bridge was the main station at street level, which is why one of restricted Bahnhübergang existed shortly before the station, where it regularly but were long jams. For this reason, the bridge was elevated and proceeded from there to above the tracks, which improved traffic flow considerably.

South Bridge

The bridge was supposed to be built as early as the 1930s, but the Second World War delayed the whole project, the construction thus did not begin until 1950. Finally, the south bridge was inaugurated on 16 June 1959. It is 189 meters long and 21.3 meters wide. At the southern end it merges into the Söderledstunneln opened in 1991.
