Centralia is a city in the south of the U.S. state of Illinois. The territory of the city is spread over four counties: Marion County, Clinton County, Washington County and Jefferson County. In 2000, Centralia had a total population of 14,136 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1856 on the site where the two original lines of the Illinois Central Railroad met.
Many well-known personalities were born in Centralia, including Morris Huck (7 March 1937), James Brady ( August 29, 1940 ) and Gary Gaetti (19 August 1958). The city is also home to the Kaskaskia College and is the venue for an annual hot air balloon festival; the ultimate feast could show about 40 hot air balloons.
Geography
Centralia is located at 38 ° 31'31 " north latitude and 89 ° 07'57 " west longitude. The city covers an area of 19.2 km ², which consists exclusively of land area.
Centralia is located 97 km east of the Mississippi River, which forms between the cities of St. Louis and East St. Louis, the boundary between Illinois and Missouri.
