Centrifugal compressor

The centrifugal or centrifugal compressor is a compressor in which the gas to be compressed is rotated by a running in a housing adapted to the impeller in rotation, and from the inside runs out. If the flow of fluid restriction, elevated pressure builds up due to the centrifugal force, which has its maximum at the periphery.

These types of compressors, inter alia, used for the charging of combustion engines. The drive power is derived from either a transmission gear of the crankshaft, or a turbine of the exhaust gas stream of the engine - in the latter case, there is a turbocharger. There used jet engines with centrifugal compressors. Today, only used for axial compressors.

When used as a turbocharger in gasoline engines, the wheel spins, depending on the type of compressor, with a speed of about 35000-60000 min -1. The boost pressure moves between 0.4 and 0.7 bar, the output of the engine can be increased by the use of such a compressor, between 30% and 60%.
