Centule III, Count of Bigorre

Centulle III. († 1178 ) was a Count of Bigorre and Viscount of Marsan. He was a son of the Viscount Peter de Marsan († 1163 ) and Countess Beatrix II of Bigorre ( † after 1148 ), whose possessions he inherited.

He was married to Matelle des Baux, with whom he had one daughter:

  • Stephanie ( Beatrix III. ) ( † around 1194), Countess of Bigorre and Viscountess of Marsan ∞ before 1177 Viscount Peter II of Dax ( † before 1180)
  • ∞ 1180 with Count Bernard IV of Comminges († 1225 )

Aran was for possession of Val d' Centulle 1170 a vassal of King Alfonso II of Aragon, while he was a vassal of the Duke of Aquitaine for Bigorre and Marsan. In 1177 he supported his son in his rebellion against Duke Richard the Lionheart, of which they were besieged and sold in the castle of Dax. 1178 Centulle was eventually captured by Richard the Lionheart. Through the mediation of the king of Aragon, he was soon released, but had to Clermont and Montbrun hand over to the Duke. In the same year he died.
