Ceolwulf I of Mercia

Ceolwulf I ( † 823 ) was the brother of the Mercian king Cenwulf. Ceolwulf was raised after his death in 821 the king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Kent. His reign lasted only two years.

During his short reign he continued the policy of his predecessor expansive compared to the Welsh kingdoms and brought with the conquest of the fortress of Deganwy in the year 822 the kingdom of Powys briefly under his control. Since the beginning of his reign Ceolwulf was confronted with internal political disunity and countless disputes, at the same time seemed to him the control of Kent to slip. Ceolwulf was overthrown in 823 by his successor Beornwulf.
