Cephissus (Athenian plain)

The Kifisos under the expressway, about one kilometer upstream of the mouth

The Kifisos (Greek Κηφισός, also Kifisos Κηφισσός, ancient Greek Kephissos Κηφισσός ) is a river in the plain of Athens in Greece Attica.

It rises on the saddle between the mountains Parnitha and Penteli north of the eponymous city of Kifissia, then flows south past the western edge of Athens, and empties into the Bay of Faliro, where it forms the border between Piraeus and the Athens suburb of Muscat in the mouth region. On the way, his run has been used since ancient times intensively for artificial irrigation.

Today, it is largely a highway built over ( Leoforos Kifisou, part of the National Road Thessaloniki -Athens- Patras 1 ). A restoration has been frequently discussed, including with reference to a former similar built-up river in Seoul.
