Ceprano

Ceprano is a town in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 8951 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 101 km southeast of Rome and 21 km southeast of Frosinone.

Geography

Ceprano is located in a loop of the Liri.

The nearby towns are: Arce, Castro dei Volsci, Falvaterra, Pofi, Ripi, San Giovanni Incarico, Strangolagalli.

History

At the junction of the Via Latina about the Liri appeared in Roman times the road station Fregellanum. After the destruction of the nearby Fregellae in the year 125 BC, many displaced residents settled in Fregellanum.

Under the name Ceparanium the place retained its importance in the Middle Ages. 1059 Pope Nicholas II enfeoffed here with Robert Guiscard of Apulia. In the chapel of Santa Giusta lifted Pope Gregory IX. excommunication on against Frederick II. Military Strategic Ceprano was the usual covered by the kings of Naples place to relocate from the north approaching conqueror armies the way. This was for example the case in 1268, when Charles of Anjou Conradin dictated a different line of approach. Also in 1495 massaged Alfonso II the defense against Charles VIII of France in Ceprano.

1861 Ceprano became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1927 it came to the newly founded province of Frosinone

During the Second World War it came to the regional nearby Battle of Monte Cassino 1944 with the advance of the Allies in Ceprano, heavy fighting with the Wehrmacht, which led to the almost complete destruction of the village.

1994 at the Ceprano calvarium of a representative of the genus Homo was found, which was designated Homo cepranensis and is probably Homo erectus / Homo heidelbergensis Act.
