Ceram rat

The Seram Rat ( Nesoromys CERAMICUS ) is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ).

So far, only a few specimens of this species were found. The animals reach a body length of about 13.5 centimeters, what still is a 14 -centimeter-long tail. Their fur is soft and dense, it is colored olive-brown, the underside is lighter. The short ears are black, the feet and the almost hairless tail are dark brown. The snout is elongated.

These animals live only on the island of Seram, Maluku. All specimens were found in rain forests at 1500 m to 1800 m above sea level, otherwise nothing is known about their lifestyle.

Seram rats inhabit only a small area with less than 1,700 km ², which is also threatened by deforestation. The IUCN lists the species about as " high risk " ( endangered ).
