The Woolly chickweed ( Cerastium tomentosum ) is a plant of the genus Horn herbs ( Cerastium ) in the carnation family ( Caryophyllaceae ).

Features

The Woolly chickweed is an evergreen, creeping offshoots forming, perennial, herbaceous plant, the plant height 15-30 ( rarely to 45 ) reaches centimeters. It is densely hairy white tomentose, her hair is unbranched. The leaves are up to 30 millimeters long and linear to lanceolate. The inflorescences consist of up to 15 flowers. The calyx is 5-7 mm long. The petals are white and twice as long as the calyx. The teeth of the capsule are slightly curved outward.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Occurrence

The Woolly chickweed comes in central and southern Italy before on slopes.

System

The Cerastium tomentosum var variety columnae ( Ten. ) Arcang. is often cultivated. It is silvery white and has upward curled leaf margins.

Use

The Woolly chickweed is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and used as a ground cover. The species is in cultivation at least since 1620. It is often neglected from the culture.
