Ceratophyllum submersum

Tender Hornwort ( Ceratophyllum submersum )

The hornwort ( Ceratophyllum submersum ) is a year-round green submersed aquatic plant of the family of Horn -leaved plants ( Ceratophyllaceae ).

Occurrence

The hornwort is found in eutrophic standing waters such as lakes or ponds in throughout Germany, Europe and parts of western Asia.

Identifying

The hornwort is a herbaceous plant and is about 25 to 60 cm long. It has, in contrast to Rauhen Hornwort fine green leaves that are two to four times dichotomously divided and has only a few ( about 5-8 ) barely visible teeth on the leaves. The fruits are also always without thorns. It flowers from June to August.

Ecology

Due to the increasing eutrophication of the water it is currently in increasing propagation. Be pollinated flowering mostly under water flowers by the water flow. The spread of the fruit is also done through the water and quite often even by birds that carry the sometimes sticky fruits to the nearest body of water. In autumn, the plant Turionen forms ( winter buds ).
