Cergy

Cergy is a commune with 58 341 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Val- d'Oise in the north- west of Paris. It is 27.8 kilometers from Paris city center and is located in the agglomeration zone Cergy -Pontoise. Cergy was founded in the 1960s and is the center of the new cities of Cergy -Pontoise with the greatest population density.

Although the neighboring Pontoise is the official Préfecture of the department, the administrative headquarters is located in Cergy. On the other hand, the building of sub-prefecture in the commune of Pontoise.

Name

The name comes from the Middle Latin word Cergy Sergiacum and means " estate of Sergius " ( a Gallo -Roman landowner ).

Demographics

As Cergy was selected to the center of the ville nouvelle in Cergy -Pontoise, it was just a small village with 2895 inhabitants ( 1968). Thereafter, the population quickly developed in the mid- 1970s there were about 10,000 inhabitants and in the early 1980s over 20,000. The population in 1990 was about 48,000, but then slowed population growth, but still rose to 54,500 in 2004.

Management

Cergy is the capital of two cantons:

  • The canton of Cergy- North is part of Cergy and the municipalities of Boissy- l'Aillerie, Osny, Puiseux -Pontoise ( 53 779 inhabitants).
  • The canton of Cergy- Sud is part of the commune of Cergy and Éragny ( 32 969 inhabitants).

Port

Port Cergy is a marina on the river Oise. It offers space for 103 vessels 5-22 m in length. The northern part of the port is reserved for restaurants and shops and was built around a small harbor.

Cergy has three railway stations of the RER line A and more of Transilien Paris - Saint- Lazare: Cergy - Préfecture Cergy - Saint -Christophe Cergy and - Le Haut.

The bus company STIVO has 17 bus lines in Cergy.

Cergy- Pontoise has 137.62 criminal incidents per 1000 population, which is well above the national average (83 per 1000) and higher than the crime rate of the department of Val- d'Oise ( 88.15 per 1000). Cergy-Pontoise is thus to Argenteuil ( 186.43 per 1000) the most dangerous city in the Val -d'Oise.
