Cerithioidea

The case of a tower snail ( Turritella sp.)

The Cerithioidea are a superfamily predominantly marine worm from the order of Sorbeoconcha. It also contains several groups of freshwater snails (eg Thiaridae (crown snails) ), who settled partly independent fresh water from the sea. The fossil record for the Cerithioidea dates back to the Cretaceous.

Features

More or less typical for members of this group of Caenogastropoda are an (at least originally ) tower-shaped shell, the presence of an operculum and an at least partially open Gonodukt. All species are dioecious, occasionally also occur parthenogenetic species. The vast number of Cerithioidea is oviparous, some ovoviviparous or viviparous groups.

System

In the classical system, the Cerithioidea become the Mesogastropen (Medium Screw ), an order of Prosobranchia ( prosobranch ) found. This classification is regarded as outdated, since Mesogastropoden not constitute a monophyletic group. In the run here, phylogenetic systematics, the Cerithioidea be made to the order Sorbeoconcha, subclass Orthogastropoda.
