Cerium ( IV) sulphate or Cerdisulfat is a salt of the rare earth metal cerium, with sulfuric acid.
Representation
The display is carried out by the reaction of ceria with conc. Sulfuric acid with heating:
Properties
All as cerium (IV ) salts is cerium ( IV) sulphate, in particular under acidic conditions, a strong oxidant. From dilute hydrochloric acid is cerium (IV ) sulfate under these conditions, elemental chlorine -free; although the reaction rate is low. With strong reducing agents, but it responds much faster.
Cerium compounds occur in the oxidation states 3 and 4. Following this monovalency react cerium ( IV) sulphate in the reaction with reducing agents to give Ce (III):
Use
Due to its oxidative property in combination with the monovalency and the resulting uniqueness of the reaction takes cerium (IV ) sulfate use in the Redoxtitrimetrie ( Cerimetry ), eg, for determining the content of paracetamol according to the European Pharmacopoeia. Standard solutions are commercially available for such applications. Furthermore, it is in the organic synthesis, such as the oxidation of 1,2- glycols, or quinone synthesis, are used.
