Cernay (Haut-Rhin)

Cernay ( German Mountain Home, alsatian Sanna ) is a French town with 11,451 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Thann, is the capital (French: chef- lieu) of the Canton of Cernay and seat of the municipal association Cernay et environs.

Location

Cernay situated on the River Thur, on the eastern flank of the Vosges. In Cernay the national roads crossing 66 ( Remiremont -Basel ) and 83 (Lyon - Strasbourg). After Thann ( sub-prefecture ) in the neighborhood there are six kilometers to Mulhouse to Belfort 18 and 35 km.

History

Cernay is mentioned for the first time as Seyrenay in 1144. Towards the end of the 13th century was the place to walled city ( 1268 ), Siegel ( 1292 ) and a council of the city, which controls the fate of the city under the supervision of the Counts of Pfirt. 1324 married Johanna Pfirt of the Duke of Austria Albrecht II result, the city came to Austria. In 1349 the plague raged. In the 17th century existed in Mountain Home, a branch of the lords of Pfirt. Its French name from the city in the 17th century after the conquest by Louis XIV

The 19th century was marked by industrialization, especially in the textile sector. 1860 was one of the first workers' settlements of a textile company. Like the rest of Alsace came Cernay in 1871 after the Franco-German war the German Empire, where it remained until 1918. During the First World War Cernay was on the front line and was destroyed about 80 percent.

After two decades of recreation German troops again marched into the city on 17 June 1940. Here was located from 1940 to 1945 in a former home for the mentally ill, the SS training camp Sennheim the Waffen- SS, in which mainly NCOs from Francophone countries were as designed, for example for the Division Charlemagne. In the battles for the beachhead Alsace ( Colmar Pocket ), the city was again affected.
