Cerro Arenales

Arenales

The volcano is located in the North Patagonian Icefield Arenales south-southwest of the Cerro Hudson volcano. The Arenales was recognized in 1963 during an expedition led by Eric Shipton as a volcano, but considered extinct. However, a small deposit of tephra was observed on a Landsat satellite image from March 8, 1979, which covered the ice cap on the southwest flank of the Arenales.

The first ascent of Arenales was made in 1958 by the Chilean- Japanese Patagonienexpedition, whose job it was to investigate the nordpatagonische ice rink scientifically. The leader of the expedition was in the hands of the Chileans Germán H. Milis and Japanese Kaoru Tanaka and Masataka Takagi. Between 20 January and 30 March, three achieved roped to the summit.
