Cerro Azul (Chile volcano)

The Cerro Azul is a 3788 m high stratovolcano in the Maule Region in Chile. The north is open towards the summit crater has a diameter of 500 meters. The volcano is part of the Descabezado Grande- Cerro Azul volcano system.

Name

The name was given by Max Quizapu boy. When asked for the name of that mountain he received from the locals the answer is " Quiza - pu" ( popularly " quien sabe, pues " for, in German: " who knows ").

Volcanism

Apart from the main crater there are some others, including the following slag Crater: The La Resoloma Craters are located beneath the west flank and the two as Los Hornitos designated on the lower southern flank of the stratovolcano.

At the outbreak in 1846 was built on the north flank of the cinder cone volcano Quizapu. This first eruption was predominantly effusive and produced dacitic lavas. They poured eastward into the Estero Barroso Valley and westward into the valley of the River blanquillo. At the same crater, however, occurred in 1932 and one of the most powerful explosive eruptions of the 20th century, when the cinder cone escalated into a crater with 600 to 700 meters in diameter and a depth of 150 meters. In the course of this outbreak 9.5 cubic kilometers of ash were ejected.

Further eruptions of the volcano: November 26, 1846 (ejection of 5 cubic kilometers of lava ), 1906, July 28, 1907, February 1912, September 8, 1914, 1916 to April 21, 1932, 1933-1938, April 1949, August 9, 1967.
