For about twenty years (1820-1840) was El Cerro the chosen place for the families resident in Havana to spend their summer vacation. The Health Home Casa de Salud del Centro Asturiano llamada La Covadonga was a local recreation center. Many noblemen built their villas here. In 1843 there were five large relaxation homes and hundreds of family units, some of which were known for their luxurious amenities.

The motto El Cerros is " El Cerro tiene la llave " ( " El Cerro has the key "). This goes back to the fact that led through the territory of present-day municipality numerous aqueducts to supply the former urban area with fresh water from nearby rivers. Some of these, such as the Zanja real, there are today.

In the course of municipal reform in 1976, Cerro was given the status of a total of 15 municipios of the city of Havana.
