César Vichard de Saint-Réal

César Vichard de Saint- Réal (* 1639 in Chambery, Savoy, † 1692 ) was a French writer and historian.

Life

Vichard de Saint- Réal was educated at the Jesuit College Clermont in Paris. Antoine Varillas was his model; he wrote almost exclusively historical novels. His Don Carlos of 1673 was used by Friedrich Schiller as a source for his eponymous drama. 1674 was his book The Conspiracy of the Spaniards against Venice in 1618 a phenomenal success, even though the work is less a work of history, what it purports to be, but contains a lot of speculation. It is more a literary pastiche in the style of Sallust. This work and his reputation as independent thinkers Hortensia Mancini, Duchesse de Mazarin, aware of him whose friend he was and with whom he went to England in 1675. The authorship of the memoirs of the Duchess was probably attributed to him erroneously.

Among his authentic works is a short treatise On the criticism (1691 ), which turns against Nicolas Andry de Bois Regard and its Réflexions sur la langue française (Thoughts on the French language ). His oeuvre was published in 1745 in three volumes; a second edition (1757 ) reached eight volumes, but this is due to the inclusion of some incorrectly attributed to him work. Saint- Réal was a fashion writer of his era, such as even the more successful Charles de Saint- Evremond.
