Cesare Maldini

Cesare Maldini ( born February 5, 1932 in Trieste, Italy ) is an Italian former football player and coach. He is the father of Paolo Maldini.

Career as a player

Maldini began his career in 1952 with his hometown club U.S. Triestina and moved to AC Milan in 1954. In Milan, he celebrated his greatest successes until 1966. In addition to national championships in 1963, he won the European Cup of Champions. The defender was then in a team with Gianni Rivera, José Altafini and Giovanni Trapattoni. For the Italian national football team, he played at the Football World Cup in Chile in 1962, left there but against Germany and Chile in the first round out. As teammate Giovanni Trapattoni he went to his playing career, he had completed in 1967 at Torino, the coach business.

Career as a coach

Cesare Maldini's first coaching position in the Italian professional football was the U.S. Foggia 1974. However, as a club coach success was missing, and so he decided in 1980 to work for the Italian federation. In the Football World Cup in Spain in 1982 he was assistant coach Enzo Bearzot and worked with the first world title for Italy since 1938. From 1986 to 1996 trained Maldini, the Italian U -21 national team and took over the coach office in 1996 by Arrigo Sacchi. He led the team to the 1998 World Cup in France. There he left unhappy in the quarter-final against hosts France in a penalty shoot out.

After the tournament, Maldini was fired as manager and replaced by Dino Zoff. In 2001, he returned as the Paraguayan national team coach back on the international football stage and qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea. Here, he retired in the second round to eventual runner-up world champion Germany 0-1 through a goal from Oliver Neuville.
