Chacarita, Buenos Aires

Chacarita is a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital. It is 2.8 km ² and has good 27,000 inhabitants (as of 2001).

Location

Chacarita is located in central Buenos Aires, between Avenidas Elcano, Del Campo, Garmendia, Warnes, Dorrego, Córdoba and Álvarez Thomas.

History

The area, which accounts for Chacarita and Colegiales today belonged formerly to the Jesuits, who had small farms there. The name is derived from the old Spanish " Chácara " ( " Small Farm" ). In 1767 they were expelled and Chacarita was owned by the Spanish crown. The only surviving building from this period is today's Escuela Nacional de Educación Técnica No. 34

Today, the district is known mainly for its cemetery. To Chacarita also belongs to the Los Andes Park, which opened in 1941 and the Federico Lacroze station.
