Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva

The Chachmei Lublin yeshiva was founded by Jude Mair Schapira and is located on the Lubartowska Road No. 85 (initial No. 57) in Lublin, Poland. Built in 1930 the building was demolished by the Nazis, and later restored and is now a listed building. The synagogue is the first museum to Hasidism in Europe.

History

Lublin has a long Jewish tradition that dates back to the 14th century. The "Jewish privilege" granted in 1336 by King Casimir promoted the settlement of Jews, even by scholars. With the yeshiva Chachmei Meir Shapiro founded in 1930 the world's largest Talmudic school. The inauguration ceremony was attended by more than 20,000 people.

In 1939, about 40 % of the inhabitants of Lublin Jewish faith, a total of around 40,000 people. Most of them died during the Holocaust in Majdanek; the Jewish quarter was destroyed. The Jeschiwagebäude still keeping. It was used until 2003 by the Medical Academy of Lublin and then the Warsaw Jewish community returned to be used, among other again as a synagogue. Yeshiva, synagogue, library and museum have been restored and furnished. When the Torah scroll was brought into the synagogue on February 11, 2007, this work was not yet completed. At the ceremony, also graduates of the yeshiva were invited who had left school before the Second World War.
