Chaco Nothura

The Chacosteißhuhn ( Nothura chacoensis ) is a species of bird in the family of Tinamou ( Tinamidae ). It was originally considered a subspecies of the Fleckensteißhuhns ( Nothura maculosa ). The presence extends to the Gran Chaco region in the north-western Paraguay and in the extreme north-central Argentina.

Features

The Chacosteißhuhn reached a size 23 to 25 centimeters. It is much brighter colored than the closely related Fleckensteißhuhn. The neck is less conspicuous patterned and the underside is lighter and more ocher - tan than other species of the genus Nothura.

Habitat

The Chacosteißhuhn inhabits the arid and semiarid savanna with bramble thickets and open woodlands.

Way of life

The lifestyle is so far little explored. The Chacosteißhuhn is probably true location. About the behavior during foraging, there is no information. The breeding season is in the southern spring / summer from September to November.

Inventory and risk

Information about the population size of the Chacosteißhuhns are not available. From BirdLife International is listed as not at risk ( least concern ). Overgrazing is a major problem in the Chaco region, because it prevents the natural cycle of fires and thus favors the spread of woody plants. The conversion of habitat to pasture and agricultural land could have an adverse impact on stocks.
