Chaeronea

Chaeronea (Latin: Chaeronea, German also Chaeronea ) was an ancient city in the west of the landscape Boeotia in Greece.

Chaeronea belonged to the 5th century BC to the city of Orchomenus, but was subsequently independently. Know the name of the city especially by the victory of King Philip II of Macedonia on the Greek cities in 338 BC at the Battle of Chaeronea. A second battle of Chaeronea took place 86 BC, when the Roman general Sulla the troops of Mithridates VI. beat of Pontos. This battle was also a clash of different concepts of warfare: on the one hand, the order of battle after the classical Greek phalanx, on the other hand, the Roman Legion. The Romans, although greatly outnumbered, the Pontier hit devastating. Mithridates VI. took this opportunity to reform his army.

From Chaeronea the writer Plutarch came.
