Geography

The County is enclosed in a small part of Pitkin from the north clockwise from Lake, Park, Fremont, Saguache, Gunnison and in the Northwest. The Chaffee County is located within the Rocky Mountains in the midst of mountain ranges Sawatch and Mosquito. Around 16,000 people live mainly in small settlements along the Arkansas River, Chaffee completely flows from north to south. Named the 1879 created by Jerome Bunty Chaffee County; one originating from Colorado U.S. Senator.

Several four-thousand, most of which bear the names of famous universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Oxford, find themselves in the Sawatch Mountain Range.

According to the census of 2000, there were 16,242 people in the county. There were 6,584 households and 4,365 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.94 percent White, 1.58 percent Black or African American, 1.09 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, 4.21 percent from other races groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,584 households out of which 25.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 6.8 percent were single mothers. 33.7 percent were non-families. 28.4 percent of all households and 11.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.77.

Based on the county the population was spread from 19.7 percent population under 18 years, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 113.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 34,368, and the median income for a family was $ 42,043. Males have a median income of $ 30,770, women $ 22,219. The per capita income was $ 19,430. 11.7 percent of the population and 7.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 17.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
