Chain Crew

As a Chain Crew refers to the three assistant referees, which the 10-yard chain and down marker to operate at one of the side lines at an american football game. The two bars at the ends of the chain display thereby always the beginning and the end ( the Line to Gain ) of the current 10 yards, which has to bridge the offense to reach a new first experiment ( first down ) yet. A new first down is achieved when the tip of the cue ball protrudes beyond the front end of the yard chain. The measurements and displays the chain crew will then begin anew. If after four attempts not have been reached the line to gain, therefore no new first down was achieved and possession changes to the previously defending team.

The down marker itself indicates the number of trials played and marked the beginning of each experiment, the current position of the game ball and thus the respective line of scrimmage ( scan line) on the field.

The wizards use the chain are referred to as rod men, the wizard, the line of scrimmage as a box indicating you.
