Chakalaka

Chakalaka is an African seasoning sauce ( relish ). The name is said to come from the Bantu language Setswana, and there are different ways of writing in South Africa. In addition to the internationally more common Chakalaka one often sees the notation chakka lakka.

Ingredients and recipe

The ingredients include, inter alia, tomatoes, carrots, peppers and chili peppers, baked beans and cabbage; as spices come depending on the recipe garlic, pepper, curry, ginger and coriander for use. Where the cabbage is cut into strips and gepickled with salt. Chakalaka is traditionally served with bread, Mielie - Pap, Samp or as an accompaniment to sausage ( wors ), Chicken Peri Peri and grilled lamb and pork. To balance its fiery flavor, it is sometimes served with Amasi ( sour curd ).

Nowadays it is also used in Western culture as a spice additive in potato chips, or in BBQ sauces. Especially during the 2010 World Cup brought many food companies European and U.S. ready meals Chakalaka flavor on the market, such as pizzas, chips, canned fish, frozen rice pans etc.

Origin

About the ethnic origin of this court there are different versions. A variant is the Indo- Malayan origin of a salad, which consists of onions, garlic, ginger, green pepper, carrots and cauliflower, seasoned with chili and curry spices.

But in the form of a thick sauce of tomatoes and onions, it is also part of the traditional tribal kitchens in Botswana.

In its present form it is believed to have originated only in the middle of the 20th century in the townships of South African city of Johannesburg.
