Chalazion

As a chalazion, Hailstone, a outbound from a meibomian gland is called granulomatous inflammation, the cause is usually a blockage of the gland excretory duct. Just below the edge of the eyelid can be palpated, a grape seed - to hazelnut-sized, usually painless and non-movable distention.

Differential diagnosis should be considered in a basal cell carcinoma or other malignant diseases of the lids to a carcinoma of the meibomian gland. An acute inflammation of the meibomian gland ( stye ) can exclude vorberichtlich, but can be a starting point for a hailstone.

Therapy

Treatment differs depending on the size. For smaller hailstones can proceed conservative, which means that spontaneous regression is awaited. The hailstone is treated with physical therapy ( use of dry heat, infrared light), otherwise with local antibiotics in the form of drops and ointment. For larger hailstones or when no improvement with conservative treatment, surgical removal is performed under local anesthesia, with particular care must be taken not to damage the edge of the eyelid. To rule out the presence of a malignant disease, a histological examination of the removed material is recommended.
