Chama Cha Mapinduzi

Chama Cha Mapinduzi ( Swahili: Party of the Revolution) is a Tanzanian party.

History

After the independence of Tanganyika in 1961 two parties certain political events in the country. On the mainland of Tanganyika Tanganyika African National Union ruled ( TANU ) and the autonomous island of Zanzibar, the Afro - Shirazi Party (ASP).

In 1977, the two parties united to form the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). First party leader was Julius Nyerere. At that time, the CCM was allowed as the sole legal and thus Unity Party of Tanzania. On 1 July 1992, the formation of other parties was legalized at a National Assembly.

Since 2013, the party is a full member of the Socialist International.

Ideology

Originally, Tanzania as a leftist leader of the African socialism, better known as Ujamaa. Today, however, the CCM has more pragmatic settings. Their main objectives are to improve social services, infrastructure and security. This is to promote the privatization and modernization of Tanzania:

  • Increased productivity, which would increase the revenue of the country
  • Creation of new jobs
  • Acquisition of new and improved technology
  • Stronger spread their own goods on the domestic and international market
  • Improvement and strengthening of the private sector

The foreign policy is based on the predominantly economic and peaceful relations with neighboring countries.

The CCM has been able to win all presidential elections, like all parliamentary elections in Tanzania and in the autonomous island of Zanzibar for themselves. Since the introduction of multiparty system, a strong opposition has arisen mainly in Zanzibar with the Civic United Front (CUF ), which, however, never could not prevail in multi-party elections in 1995, 2000 and 2005.

When a new House of Representatives of Zanzibar on 30 October 2005, the CCM candidate Amani Abeid Karume received 53.18 percent of the votes cast. In addition, the CCM won 30 of 50 seats in the House of Representatives.

At the national presidential elections on 14 December 2005, the former Foreign Minister Jakaya Kikwete was elected with 80.28 percent of the vote as the new President of Tanzania and the CCM won 206 of 232 seats in parliament.

Chairman

All party leaders of the CCM were also President of Tanzania. Party founder, Julius Nyerere was 1954-1990 chairman of the party, from 1962 to 1964 and President of Tanganyika from 1964 to 1985 President of Tanzania. His successor, Ali Hassan Mwinyi has held the post of party chairman from 1990 to 1996 and was President from 1985 to 1995. Benjamin Mkapa was party chairman from 1996 to 2006 and from 1995 to 2005, President of Tanzania. Currently Jakaya Kikwete President of Tanzania since 2005 and has finally taken over the post of party chairman in 2006.
