Chambers Covered Bridge

The Chambers Bridge is a historic railroad bridge and is in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon, in the United States. It is situated near the South River Road, near the town of Cottage Grove. The special feature of this bridge is that it is covered and as such is the last of its kind in the state of Oregon.

History

The bridge was built in 1925 by the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern Railway, to permit, within a branch of the general rail network by railway timber transportation at that sawmill Frank Chambers Mill in Cottage Grove. The useful life of Chambers Bridge was short, as the sawmill in 1943 completely destroyed by fire. Over the years, the bridge was repeatedly ravaged by arsonists, the bridge itself was not affected, but the wooden parts of the building were damaged to some extent. From 1993 to 1995, the bridge was inspected under the Covered Bridge Program. A span of 23.8 meters and crossed the river Coast Fork Willamette.

The truss bridge was recorded on 29 November 1979 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 79,002,081 in the registers.

The beginning of 2010 it was demolished for the purpose of renovation. In the summer of 2011 the bridge was rebuilt according to original plans. The reopening took place on 3 December 2011.
