Chambéry

Chambery (German outdated Kamrach ) is a city in the Rhône- Alpes region of France. It is the prefecture ( administrative seat ) of the department of Savoie.

The city has an airport and is home to the University of Savoy. Live in an area of ​​20.99 km ² 58 437 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011). The whole agglomeration counts some 125,000 inhabitants.

Chambery has been named to the Alpine town of the year 2006.

Geography

The city is located on 270 m at the foot of the Savoy Alps. Not far away are the Regional Natural Park " the Bauges and La Chartreuse ". In the south, bordering the vineyards of the Coteaux de la Combe de Savoie, to the north of the Lac du Bourget. The Lac du Bourget is the largest natural lake in France, and is largely funded by Leysse River, which crosses the city from south to north.

History

The Romans had at this point a settlement, which they called Lemencum. From 1232 to 1536 the city was the residence of the Dukes of Savoy.
