History

The Champaign County was established in 1833 and was formerly a part of Vermilion County. The County and the seat of the district were named after the Champaign County in Ohio and its main town Urbana, as the member of the State Parliament, which brought the application to run the county, came from this part of Ohio.

The development of the county, was enormously advanced by the arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad, which connected Chicago to Cairo. Even more important for the development of the county was the settlement of the " land-grant " University, the University of Illinois in 1867.

The closure of Chanute Air Training Center in Rantoul in the 1990s suffered the northern part of the county a great economic and demographic setback.

Although the Republicans possessed a district council majority since the mid-19th century, gained the Democrats in the 2000 elections for the first time a majority that they could defend since then. In the U.S. presidential election of 2004, the Champaign County was one of only 15 out of 102 counties in Illinois, where John Kerry won a majority ( 50.5 percent ) of the votes.
