Champien

Champien is a commune of 290 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district Montdidier and Roye Canton.

Geography

Champien is located south of the Somme, 97 kilometers north- west of Reims, 31 kilometers north of Compiègne, and 5.1 km east of the canton capital Roye, at an average height of 91 meters above sea level. The municipality has an area of 8.77 square kilometers.

Champien is a climate of type Cfb ( according to Köppen and Geiger ) assigned: Warm Temperate rain climate ( C ), fully wet ( f), the warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C ( b). There is a maritime climate with moderate summer.

History

1793 Champien received by the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and 1801 by the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte ( 1769-1821) as Champien et Waucourt the right to local self-government.

In the First World War (1914-1918) took place in Champien from 23 to September 29, 1914 as part of the " race to the sea ", a bitter war of position held, while large parts of the town and the park of the castle were destroyed.
