Champmartin

Champ Martin is a village and formerly independent municipality in the district Broye Vully the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. On 1 January 2002 Champmartin was incorporated into Cudrefin.

Geography

Champmartin located at 463 m above sea level. M., 7.5 km north- northwest of the district town of Avenches (air line). The small village extends in a broad valley floor, which is sunk southwest of Mont Vully in the Molassehöhenrücken. North of the village of the ridge falls into a steep slope (Les Roches ) up to 70 m from the Lake of Neuchâtel. Along the lake shore there is a 500 m wide reed belt, behind a forest belt. These are now designated as a nature and bird reserve. The former municipality area was around 2.6 km ².

Population

With 33 inhabitants ( end of 2000 ) Champmartin was before the merger with Cudrefin of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. The population of the town was in 1850 still 57 inhabitants. After the population had decreased to 1960 by more than half to 25 people, a slight increase in population was registered again since then. The proportion of the German population in 2000 was 48 %, which was unusually high for a Vaudois congregation.

Economy

Champ Martin still lives mainly from agriculture, especially from agriculture and animal husbandry. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village.

Traffic

The village lies on the road from Avenches to Cudrefin. By Postbus course, which runs from Avenches to Cudrefin, Champmartin is connected to the public transport network.

History

The territory of Champmartin was settled very early. On the shores of Lake Neuchâtel was during the Bronze Age settlement. In the forest of Charmontel south of the village several grave mounds were discovered. The first documentary mention of the place was already in 1425 under the present name.

Since the Middle Ages Champ Martin was part of the Kastlanei Cudrefin who was under the influence of Savoy. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Avenches. After the collapse of the ancien régime Champmartin in 1798 affiliated to the Canton of Fribourg during the Helvetic Republic. With the enactment of the Act of Mediation in 1803 the village was re- allocated together with the present-day district of Avenches an exclave of the Canton of Vaud. On 1 January 2002, the merger with Cudrefin was finally completed. Champmartin belongs to the parish Montet - Cudrefin.
