Chan Santokhi

Chandrikapersad Santokhi ( born February 3, 1959 in Marienburg ), and Chan Santokhi, is a Surinamese politician and former police chief.

Life

From 1978 to 1982 Santhokhi studied at the Police Academy of the Netherlands in Apeldoorn. In 1982 he returned to Suriname and found a job with the police in Geyersvlijt and Wanica. In 1989, the head of a criminal investigation and police chief in 1991.

In September 2005, he was sworn in as Minister of Justice and was, until September 2010 at the office. During his tenure, he campaigned for a crackdown on the drug trade. In July 2011 Santokhi became chairman of the Vooruitstrevende Hervormings Partij ( VHP).

Santokhi, who was for fifteen years the official representative in the Comisión para el Control del Abuso de Drogas Interamericana ( CICAD ), was elected on 6 December 2010 for a year as President of the organization. The CICAD is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States, which coordinates drug policy in the Western Hemisphere. In 2009, he was the vice president of that organization for a year.
