Chan Wing-wah

Chan Wing -wah (Chinese陈永华/陈永华, Pinyin Chen Yonghua, born February 2, 1954 in Hong Kong) is a Chinese composer and conductor.

He is Professor of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and president of the development company in Hong Kong. He was also Chairman of the Hong Kong and Vice President of the Asian Composers' Association and board member of the International Society for Contemporary Music.

As a composer, he created more than 100 works, including eight symphonies. He has won several awards, so the ACL Yoshiro Irino Memorial Prize and as a Justice of the Peace. Chan Wing -wah is a member of the Election Committee for the election of the Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, 2012.

Life

Chan Wing -wah sang from the age of sixteen in a Catholic church choir. He obtained in 1974 the teacher's diploma from Northcote College of Education and in 1975 he graduated from the music teacher examination by Sir Robert Black College of Education of the Hong Kong Institute of Education. From 1975 to 1979 he studied composition with David Gwilt at the Chinese University of Hong Kong ( CUHK ) and obtained 1979 Bachelor of Arts ( Music).

He received in 1979 the Fellowship Diploma in Music Composition ( FTCL ) from Trinity College of Music in London. From 1980 to 1985 he was Commonwealth Scholarship for composition with John Beckwith at the University of Toronto and reached the degrees Master of Music (1981) and Doctor of Music ( 1985). Sponsored by the DAAD in 1986, he attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses of the International Music Institute Darmstadt. The European avant-garde, in particular Hans Werner Henze and Olivier Messiaen, exerted a strong influence on him.

His return to Hong Kong he founded in 1994 in an interview as follows:

" I can not accept known to posterity as a Canadian or Canadian Chinese composer. "

He composed eight symphonies and mostly orchestral and chamber music. His works have been played in Australia, China, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hungary, the United Kingdom and the United States. Artists covered include the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble, Ensemble Antipodes, the ensemble Fires of London, the Kronos Quartet and the ensemble Sortisatio.

He was from 1993 to 2004 Chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild. From 1993 to 2009 he was Honorary Conductor of the Hong Kong Children's Choir. Since 2001 he is chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (successor of Malcolm Bennett ). From 1995 to 2004 he was a member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Since 1995 he has been Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society. From 1995 to 2000 he was on the board of the Guangzhou Federation of Youths. From 1996 to 2006 he was Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. He was from 1997 to 2001 Board Member of the International Society for Contemporary Music until 2002 Vice -President of the Asian Composers League. Since 2000 he has been an advisor to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and since 2005 of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. From 2002 to 2004 he was Chairman of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra ( 1994-1996 Composer-in- Residence ). From 2004 to 2005 he was on the advisory board of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra from 2004 to 2006 of the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Melody Makers. From 2005 to 2006 he was a member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Consultative Committee. He was included in the online version of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and in 2009 a member of the Chinese Musicians' Association.

Since 1986, he teaches music at the CUHK, 1992, he headed the music department. He was Reader in 1996. From 1998 to 2000 he was Vice Dean and 2000-2006 Vice-Rector of the Faculty of Arts at CUHK. In 2001 he became professor of music. Since 2007 he is Director of the Centre for Creative and Performing Arts, and since 2009 Deputy Head of the College of Humanities and Law, School of Professional And Continuing Education at the University of Hong Kong.

On November 22, 2011, he was appointed as an elector for the professional group culture in the 1200 -member Election Committee, which the Chief Executive and thus chooses the head of government of the Hong Kong SAR. The election will take place on 25 March 2012.
