Chanal is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The municipality is located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The name of the village means sage who teaches. Administrative seat and largest town of the Municipalities is the same Chanal.

The municipality has about 10,800 inhabitants and an area of 408.1 km ². The municipality borders the Municipalities Huixtán Chanal, Las Margaritas, Oxchuc, Altamirano, Amatenango del Valle, San Cristobal de las Casas and Comitán de Domínguez.
