Division

Chandpur ( Bengali: চাঁদপুর, Cādapur ) is a city in southeastern Bangladesh on the banks of the river Meghna, near its junction with the river Padma. In the more than 100,000 inhabitants, the city is the seat of the administrative district of the same name. The town consists of 15 wards ( districts ) and covers an area of 7.77 km ².

Since 1897, the city has its own city council. In the first half of the 20th century, several Indian and European companies established for the processing of jute in Kumilla factories. As a result of the division of the independence of the subcontinent in 1947, most of these factories were closed.

However, the port remained an important trading center for jute and grain. In addition, the port is still in use today as a trading center for ship repairs, for salt refinery for the manufacture of fishing nets and for the production of oils.

Parts of the city are increasingly drawn from erosion by the Meghna affected. The Government of Bangladesh has provided since 1973 for the development of dams already over 350 million Taka.
