Chapada Diamantina

The Chapada Diamantina is a low mountain range in the Brazilian state of Bahia. It covers an area of ​​around 38,000 km ². The foot of the mountain is about 400 meters high, the highest points are the summit of Pico do Barbado at 2033 meters, and Pico das Almas, with 1980 meters.

From August to October it is very dry, the subsequent rainy season lasts from November to March.

Vegetation

In the Chapada Diamantina very different vegetation types are found. They include rainforest on the rainy eastern edge of the Chapada, the inland delta of the Marimbus swamps, various dry forest and dry bush societies, savannas and gallery forests. Since the natural vegetation is threatened by human use, today is about one- tenth of the area of the Chapada Diamantina under protection. In addition to the National Park of Chapada Diamantina, there are protected areas Marimbus / Iraquara and Serra do Barbado and the Parque Estadual do Morro do Chapéu and Parque Municipial Sempre Viva.
