Chapecó

Chapecó is a city in the region Oeste Catarinense, in the west of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, about 630 km west of the capital Florianópolis.

The area of the administrative unit comprises 625 km ², and has about 180,000 inhabitants. The city is the center of Região Metropolitana de Chapecó. It consists of the municipalities Cordilheira Alta, Seara, xaxim, Guatambu and Nonoai.

The city was founded in 1917 by Italian immigrants, and now has a university, the Unochapecó - Universidade Regional de Comunitária Chapecó, and is the seat of the Diocese of Chapecó the Roman Catholic Church ( Catedral Santo Antônio ).
