Chardonnay, Saône-et-Loire

Chardonnay is a commune in the Bourgogne region in the department of Saône -et -Loire. Administratively, the church is assigned to the Canton Lugny and the Mâcon district.

Geography

The small municipality with 192 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) located in the Haut- Departmental Mâcon on Route D 58 between Lugny and Tournus. The municipal area also includes the hamlet of west Pittet.

History

Toponymy

The place name is probably derived from the Latin word Cardonnacum from: a, place with lots of thistles '. Chardon is then also the French word for ' thistles '.

Viniculture

Chardonnay is probably the namesake for the Chardonnay grape variety, which now dominates the vineyards of the Maconnais and is very common worldwide. The wines produced in the village may be marketed under the designation of origin (Appellation d' Origine ) AOC Mâcon or Mâcon- Chardonnay AOC. The winegrowers Cave coopérative vinicole de Chardonnay 1994 merged with that of the neighboring community Lugny.
