Chares of Athens

Chares ( ancient Greek Χάρης ) was an Athenian commander of the 4th century BC.

Chares was the son of Kleochares, one of the renowned military leader of the Athenians. Chares fought 367 BC in the many wars, was involved in the Athens of his time. Repeatedly, he was able to achieve brilliant results, especially 349-340 BC, when he fought against Philip of Macedon. However, he was no match for 338 BC at the Battle of Chaeronea the Macedonian tactics.

Chares withdrew 335 BC after Sigeion the Hellespont back, fought in 333 BC for the Persians against Alexander the Great in the Aegean Sea and held by 2,000 men of Mytilene, until he had to surrender in 332 BC.

324 BC Chares was no longer alive.
