Charleroi is a borough in Washington County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. In 2000, Charleroi had 4,871 inhabitants; until the official 2009 estimate, the population dropped to 4,542.

Location

Charleroi is located on the left bank of the Monongahela River, one of the headwaters of the Ohio River. About 35 km to the north lies Pittsburgh, the center of the metropolitan area, which includes part of Charleroi.

At the southern edge of Charleroi runs in east-west direction Interstate 70, southwest of the village at this point the four-lane U.S. Highway 43 crosses. Through the center of Charleroi runs parallel to the Monongahela River, the Pennsylvania Route 88 and a railway line of CSX Transportation.

History

Charleroi was founded in 1890 and a year later entered as a Borough. The population in 1900 was just under 6000 inhabitants and grew in the following decades until 1940 to almost 11,000. In 2000, there were then only 4,871 inhabitants, since the decline of the steel industry led to a large migration of population.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 a population of 4,871 was determined. These distributed to 4,871 households in 2,258 families. The population density was 2442.5 people per square kilometer. There were 2,624 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 1,315.8 per square kilometer buildings.

The population was in 2000 from 95.3 percent white, 3.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native Americans, Asians 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent other. 0.8 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 0.7 percent of the population consisted of Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.

20.5 percent were under 18 years, 7.1 percent between 18 to 24, 27.1 percent of 25-44, 20.2 percent from 45 to 64 and 25.0 percent 65 and older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females were statistically 81.4 men in the over 18 -year-olds 77.1.

The median income per household was 23 593 U.S. dollars ( USD), the median family income $ 31,699. The median income for men was $ 30,093, and for women about $ 23,873. The per capita income amounted to $ 13,752. Around 16.1 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the total population were below the poverty line income.
