Charles A. Eldredge

Charles Augustus Eldredge (* February 27 1820 in Bridport, Addison County, Vermont, † October 26, 1896 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1875 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1825, Charles Eldredge moved with his parents to Canton in upstate New York, where he attended the public schools. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1846 admitted to the bar he began in Canton to work in his new profession. In 1848 he moved his residence and his law firm to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. In his new home he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party.

Between 1854 and 1856 Eldredge was a member of the Senate of Wisconsin. In the congressional elections of 1862 he was in the then newly created fourth electoral district of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1875 six legislative periods. These were shaped by the events of the civil war and its consequences. Since 1873, Eldredge represented as the successor of Philetus Sawyer the fifth district of Wisconsin. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives there were adopted 1865-1870 the 13th, the 14th and the 15th Amendment.

1874 Charles Eldredge was not nominated by his party for another term in Congress. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on October 26, 1896 in Fond Du Lac.
