His first law firm he opened in Marquette (Michigan). In 1890 he moved to Duluth ( Minnesota) where he continued his profession as a lawyer, and was admitted to the Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1893 to 1895.

1900 tried him both the Populist Party and the Silver Republican Party in their respective convents to persuade to run for Vice- Presidential candidate of each party, but what Towne refused. In about this time that its membership falls to the Democratic Party. After the death of Cushman Davis Towne was appointed to succeed him as United States Senator, a post which he only just under two months, from December 5, 1900 held until January 28, 1901.

In 1901 Towne moved to New York City, where he spent three years later, in 1904, another successful year for a seat in the House of Representatives - this time for the State of New York - a candidate. His term lasted from March 4, 1905 to March 3, 1907.

After the death of his first wife, Maude Wiley, married the 58 -year-old Towne on March 3, 1917, the only 29 -year-old Alice Elkin. Whether Towne had life time children is not known.
