Charles Allen Culberson

Charles Allen Culberson ( born June 10, 1855 in Dadeville, Alabama; † 19 March 1925 Washington DC ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, who represented the state of Texas in both chambers of Congress. In addition, he was its governor.

Life

In the year after his birth moved Culbersons family from Alabama to Texas, where she worked, and later settled in Jefferson in Gilmer. His father David was politically active and was from 1874 to 1897 the U.S. House of Representatives on.

Charles Culberson received his education at the Virginia Military Institute, where he in 1874 reached its conclusion. Later he studied law at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. In 1877 he was admitted to the bar in Daingerfield, after which he began practicing as a lawyer in Jefferson. 1887 Culberson moved to Dallas.

Policy

His political career began in 1890 with the election of the Attorney General of Texas. This he remained until 1894, when he announced his candidacy for the governorship of Texas; the election the following year, he won. After two two-year terms of office, he decided to be a candidate for the U.S. Senate, in which he moved, having won the election on 25 January 1899. After three re-election he remained until March 3, 1923 in Washington; yet he was even confirmed in 1916 by the population in office, although it due to health problems - was also an alcoholic Culberson - could not run a campaign in Texas. During his early years as a senator, he was a member of the Lodge Committee, which investigated violations of law in the Philippine-American War. Later he stood in front of several committees, including from 1913 to 1919 the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Also in 1922 he appeared again at the election, but lost already in the internal party Trials against Earle Bradford Mayfield, who then won the election itself. Culberson thus suffered their first defeat of his political career. One reason was obvious that he had taken a negative position against the Ku Klux Klan. Charles Culberson then went into retirement and died on March 19, 1925 of pneumonia. He was buried in Fort Worth.
